When Every Second Counts: Starlink Observability in Datadog for Disaster Response

How SignalWeave puts Starlink fleet telemetry in Datadog — 67 curated metrics per terminal, Integration Hub tools, and the same NOC workflows you already run when traditional infrastructure fails.

When Every Second Counts

When Hurricane Helene struck the Southeast in September 2024, emergency teams across North Carolina faced a communications crisis: power out for more than a million customers, cell towers and fiber destroyed, and rescue coordination depending on satellite links that had to stay online without a second platform to watch them.

That scenario is why we built SignalWeave — the official Datadog Technology Partner for Starlink fleet observability. Starlink telemetry belongs in the same Datadog organization, dashboards, monitors, and on-call rotations your SRE and NOC teams already use. No separate monitoring product. No second agent.

Today, SignalWeave ships as a Datadog Agent integration with 67 curated metrics per terminal, out-of-the-box dashboards and monitors, and an Integration Hub of interactive tools to plan tags, model payload volume, and generate Agent configuration before you roll out to production.

Why disaster fleets need Datadog-native observability

Emergency deployments fail quietly when teams cannot answer basic questions in real time:

  • Is this terminal online, obstructed, or degraded?
  • Is throughput below what VoIP, CAD, or telehealth systems require?
  • Is hardware or software telemetry trending toward failure on generator power?
  • Which county, site, or asset owns the dish that just dropped?

Generic network monitoring was not designed for satellite handoffs, weather-driven obstruction, or fleets spread across counties and agencies. You need fleet context — tags, topology, and historical correlation — inside Datadog.

What SignalWeave ships today

SignalWeave ships as a production Datadog Agent integration. Here is what is live on signalweave.io and in the Integration Hub:

Datadog Agent integration

  • 67 curated operational metrics per Starlink terminal (from 200+ available fields), collected on a configurable interval — default 15 seconds
  • ~1.1 KB per terminal per collection cycle — engineered for bandwidth-constrained maritime, aviation, and remote sites
  • Metrics + events in Datadog today; logs on the roadmap
  • Dashboards, monitors, and service checks included — deploy and alert without building from scratch
  • Runs as a standard Datadog Agent check — the same Agent you already operate on vessels, rigs, aircraft, and remote POPs

See the full metric catalog in the complete metrics list and plain-English definitions in metrics explained.

Integration Hub tools

Before you paste IPs into conf.yaml, use the workflow we built into /docs/tools:

  1. Tagging strategy tool — industry playbooks (maritime, aviation, energy, healthcare, remote sites), Google SRE and Datadog tagging guidance, interactive terminal tag explorer, and executive-ready strategy exports.
  2. Payload simulator — model fleet bandwidth by terminal count, metric groups, and collection interval; understand uplink impact before you deploy Agents at sea or in the field.
  3. Config generator — import your strategy JSON and generate highlighted conf.yaml plus Ansible, Terraform, Chef, and Puppet exports.

That sequence mirrors how enterprise teams actually roll out: tags → volume → config → deploy. The onboarding guide walks engineers through Marketplace enablement, verification, and fleet expansion.

Configuration and IaC

For multi-site fleets, read the configuration reference for metric group toggles and collection interval tuning, and IaC & config management for Git-based inventory, Ansible/Terraform patterns, and fleet-wide rollout.

Compare on-prem Agent collection vs cloud API approaches in the architecture comparison doc.

Operational outcomes in the field

Teams running SignalWeave in Datadog use the same workflows for disaster response, maritime operations, and remote energy sites:

  • Prevent silent failures — alert on dish offline, obstruction, and performance degradation before users open tickets
  • Correlate by asset — route the right terminal to the right on-call engineer using consistent tags
  • Right-size bandwidth — use the payload simulator to avoid over-collecting on expensive uplinks
  • Document incidents — retain historical telemetry for after-action reviews and compliance

Pricing is straightforward: $49 per Starlink terminal per month for the flagship integration (see pricing). One product surface, one Agent check, one pane of glass.

Plan your rollout

Whether you are standing up Starlink at evacuation centers, onboard a fleet, or across a distributed energy grid, the path is the same:

  1. Review the onboarding guide
  2. Run the tagging strategy tool for your industry
  3. Validate payload with the simulator
  4. Generate config with the config generator
  5. or contact sales for enablement and fleet planning

We also publish an open product roadmap — Asset Intelligence, expanded protocol coverage, and deeper network observability are next.
